Simon Rushton

Simon Rushton has worked in Commercial Radio as a writer, producer and trainer for over 14 years. In 1989 Simon spent three weeks with Metro Radio as part of his college work experience. It was an eye opener for Simon into the world of the Radio Advertising Creatives. After finishing his degree he joined Metro Radio as an Assistant Sound Engineer. It was there that Simon had his first experience of writing radio commercials and got helpful pointers from some of the most experienced Creatives in the UK at the time. From there Simon moved to Signal Radio in Stoke, then to Radio Aire in Leeds and then returned to Newcastle for a spell managing the Creative Department at the newly launched Century Radio in Newcastle. In April 1995 Simon launched Penpushers, offering Freelance Copywriting services, working for various clients in the U.K. and abroad (including EMAP and GWR Group). Writing radio commercials and dealing directly with clients. Simon also offered training and consultancy and ran a number of training events and client seminars. After a second brief stint with Radio Aire In Leeds, Simon joined GWR. First as Creative East Area Manager, then as Group Creative Special Projects Manager.

Qualifications:

Simon graduated with a degree in Radio, Film and Television and now he is also one of just a hand full of copywriters in the UK who has gained recognised qualifications in Radio Copywriting and Management. Those qualifications include:- MRM - Manager of Radio Marketing Diploma; RMP - Radio Marketing Professional Diploma; CRMC - RAB (USA)Certified Radio Marketing Consultant Diploma; CRC – RMB (Canada) Certified Radio Copywriter; CPCC –RAB (USA) Certified Professional Commercial Copywriter. Simon also bought a Doctorate over the internet. But that is another story.

Awards:

Simon has numerous awards including finalist nominations in The London International Advertising Awards, A 2001 Vox Award  for "Best Use of Music", and his work has been recognised in the Kenya Industry Night Awards, where a campaign he devised with Creative Director of Kiss FM, Nairobi, Roy Karuhize won "Radio Campaign of the Year 2002" for the Safaricom Phone Network. As well as winning the awards, Simon was asked to be a Judge in the 2003 Vox Awards, awards which are fast becoming the leading Creative Advertising Awards for the UK Radio Advertising Industry. More satisfying are the number of clients who have said that campaigns they have run, written by Simon, have worked and had a significant impact on their business. Most significantly for Simon was a campaign written for a radio station in Kenya, what was to be the first AIDS/HIV campaign to run on Kenyan Commercial Radio. Radio really can make a difference.
